About the association
The Icelandic Infertility Association was founded in 1990 by a group of people who all had gone to the UK for fertility treatment. At the time there were no fertility treatments available in Iceland.
Since 1990 the association has gone through periods where it’s been very active and then times where little or nothing has been done. We are proud to say that since 1999 the association has been very active and has grown from strength to strength.
One of the main things we’ve been working on in the past 5 years is increasing awareness of infertility. To do so we’ve worked with the media – TV, newspapers and magazines – as well as promoting the website and forums we host here.
About fertility treatments in IcelandIt wasn’t until October 1991, after a year of preparation, that fertility treatments became available in Iceland. In the beginning the plan was to treat 100-150 couples a year, soon it became obvious that the need was greater. Today there are about 320-350 treatments a year, excluding IUI (artificial insemination – around 300 pr year) and FET (frozen embryo transfer – around 90 pr year).
In October 2004 the fertility clinic moved out of the hospital (Landspítali University Hospital) and is now independently run as IVF-klínikin.
